Down on the Farm with Our Dolch Words

I fell in love with these farm animals by From The Pond Graphics. I knew that  I wanted to make these activities for the fall when we study the farm.  However, I saw that many people study the farm in the spring so I went ahead and made them now :)  
I made a pre-primer set and a primer set.  I made small sight word cards with the farm animals that will fit on the Roll, Say, Keep board.  I also print these same cards to use with Where is Baby Chick? and as fluency rings.  
I included 5 fluency pages because I feel it is important for the students to practice reading from left to right and tracking with their finger.
Finally, I included 15 bingo pages.  We like to play bingo on Fridays for fun review/reinforcement.  I also like to include bingo in my sub plans.

Spring Sight Word Sentences

 In my reading stations this week, I will have Spring Sight Word Sentences.  The students will get the baggies of flowers and have to put them in the correct order to make a sentence.  Each baggie will contain one sentence. I created this activity using all of the pre-primer and primer Dolch words. The students have been working very hard to learn their sight words this year and they have done a great job!!  We have been writing dictated sentences in our journals and they have been studying their words for homework.  I realized, however, that it is a bit more difficult for the class to write their sentences when we use dry erase boards and I call out a random sentence for them.  I want to give them extra practice this week with their words......a different way to see and use their words.  If you like this idea, you can find it here at TpT or here at TN :)

 We are learning about plants and insects!
We have been reading more non-fiction books during our reading block to follow the common core standards.  My class loves it!
They can not get enough new science facts!
We read our dragonfly book and then each student had to write a fact from the book that they had learned.  Then, they had to draw a detailed picture to match their sentence.  I was so proud of their work!!!!  Each student had a fact that they were ready to write, no one raised their hand to say they needed help, and they drew such great detailed pictures.  They were so proud of themselves!!!!!
At a separate time, we made our dragonflies.  We do have 6 feet on the bottom but they are hard to see :)
(I used Carolea Williams/Teach Bright writing paper from her sight word sentence frames activities.  They are 1/2 sheets with lines so they are perfect.)

I love, love, love these Talk Points from Learning Resources.  They come in a set of 5(red, green, blue, orange, purple) and you can record your voice for 10 seconds.  I started using these in my sight word station for students who were struggling.  I could not give them an activity to complete if they could not read their words.  
As you can see, I put the activity on construction paper to match the Talk Point.  I recorded my voice saying the three sight word phrases or "mini-sentences."  The students pick up a basket and matching construction paper.  They find a spot on the floor to work and grab a dry erase board.  Their job is to read each sentence.  If they can't, then they can push the Talk Point and listen to the sentence.  Then, they use the magnetic letters to spell the sentence and a dry erase marker to write the sentence.  The students enjoy anything with magnetic letters and dry erase boards :)  They also enjoy using the Talk Points.
*When I first started using these, I recorded just words and not sentences so the students would work on 3 words at a time.  Now that we are in the 4th quarter, the students are comfortable with short sentences.

We are learning about oviparous animals this week in science. The students loved listening to Chickens Aren't the Only Ones by Ruth Heller and discovering which animals come from eggs.  I have created What is in the egg? as a reading station for this week and next.  My students love to play games together.  They can be at this station for cvc words and sight words.  I can differentiate the cvc station for my groups since I included the dolch words for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade.  I also differentiate the sight word station by only using the words that each group is able to read. I want to make sure my students are fluent with their sight words and not "guessing" when they are reading.

Spring Short Vowel Word Families

I have created word families for  the short vowel sounds.
I give each group 3-4 different word families in their station.

The students read the words on the frog and place them  on the correct word family. 
For students who are still learning to sound out their words. I have included letter tiles so they can practice changing the beginning sounds in each family. I may only give them one word family at a time to concentrate on.
I have included worksheets for the students to write the words when they are done.
